Hot Summer Festival

There are plenty of festivals in summer.
We introduce representative festivals and splendid dances in Oita Prefecture.

[Usuki city]
"Usuki Gion Festival"
It is a traditional festival that has been held since 1643. Three mikoshi, a portable shrine and two floats line up in rows and have a classic atmosphere. It is a spectacular festival suitable for castle town Usuki.

[Hita city]
"Hita Gion Festival"
The Hita Gion Festival began to ward of evil in summer. A gorgeous luxury Yamaboko floats which is as high as 10 m in length goes around each town along with the sound of Gion music. It is also designated as UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage in December 2016.

Date: July 22 - July 23, 2017

[kitsuki city]
"Tenjin Festival"
The biggest summer festival in Kitsuki city boasting a history of over 300 years. Floats and court cars are walking around the city. On the last night, you can see the spectacular scenery where the floats are bumping and the excitement reaches the climax.

[Nakatsu City]
"Nakatsu Gion"
Boasting a tradition of 580 years, it is a festival designated as prefectural intangible folk cultural asset. On the first day, fireworks festival, various events will be held on the 2nd and 3rd day. During the period, floats are circulating throughout the city, and the dance can be seen around the corner of streets.

[Oita city]
"Oita Tanabata Festival"
 The central shopping area competes for beauty with ornate gaze Tanabata decoration. On the first day, floats "Funai Pacchin", which is brave and dynamic with a warrior appearance and a rising dragon, walks extensively. On the second day, it is exciting with various kinds of dance and drum performance. On the third day, "fireworks festival" will be held in which about 6,000 fireworks will be hit in the night sky.

[Himeshima Village]
"Hemeshima Bon Dance Festival "
Himesima Bon Dance is said to have been derived from the Nembutsu dance of the Kamakura period (1185-1333). There are traditional dances such as fox dance and aya dance and creative dance entertaining audience with a humor and tasteful costume.

[Tsukumi city]
"Tsukumi Folding Fan Dance "
The Tsukumi folding fan dance transmitted from about 450 years ago is characterized by the contrast of elegance where a beautiful folding fan fans and courageousness of the work expressing the war of the time. Please have a look at Tsukumi folding fan dance by all means once.
