Hakusui Dam was constructed in 1938 on the Ono River, running down from the outer crater of Aso eastward through Oita Prefecture.
Keeping the water pressure down with the fragile nature of the soil around the area in mind, the Dam controls the flow of the river so that it slowly trickles down the ground surface.
The curvy nature of the stream coming out of the Dam is quite popular and highly praised - at times said to be "the most beautiful dam in the country."
The location is also a popular scenic destination for greenery in spring and foliage in fall.
