Accessing Oita with the JR Kyushu Rail Pass

Arrival at Fukuoka Airport

Currency exchange, restrooms, shops, and other amenities are available in the arrival lobby of the Fukuoka Airport International Terminal Building. We recommend that you make use of these facilities prior to your departure for Oita.
Please refer to the following procedures for accessing Oita using your SUNQ Pass.

Purchase JR Kyushu Rail Pass

The JR Kyushu Rail Pass is available for purchase at the TISCO Japan Travel Information Center located on the 1st floor of the Fukuoka Airport International Terminal. English and Korean language services are available. The availability of Chinese language services varies depending on the day. The pass is also available for purchase at the JR Kyushu Travel Hakata Branch ticket counter within the Hakata Station building.

JR Kyushu Rail Pass: 4 types

 * Northern Kyushu consists of: Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki, Oita, and Kumamoto.

Access to Hakata Station

Go from the Fukuoka Airport International Terminal to Hakata Station.

By non-stop bus to Hakata Station (approx. 15 min, 250 yen)

The non-stop bus to Hakata Station does not require reservations. There is plenty of cargo space for larger luggage. Purchase a JR Kyushu Rail Pass at the TISCO Japan Travel Information Center located across from the arrival gate, exit the International Terminal building, and head to Bus Stop #2 for the non-stop bus to Hakata Station.

By taxi (approx. 15 min, 1,500 yen)

Taxis are useful if/when there are no buses departing at a convenient time from the International Terminal. They are available right outside of the Terminal exits.

Access to Beppu from Hakata Station

Please refer to the following procedures for accessing Beppu via our recommended route, JR limited express train, Sonic.
If/when you wish to obtain a designated seat, please do so at the Station ticket counter prior to boarding the train.

1. Go through the turnstile

Please confirm your departure time, destination, and platform on the overhead digital board. Present your JR Kyushu Rail Pass to the station staff at the turnstile.

The overhead digital board will display information in English and Japanese.

2. To the platform

There will be a number of digital boards displaying train and platform information throughout the premises. Check for the right platform and car number prior to getting onboard. Double-check for the right car and the seat number on the ticket if you have purchased a designated seat.

There are two types of Express Sonic: white and blue.

Estimated time of travel to Beppu is approximately 2 hours.

3. To your lodging facility from Beppu Station

【Lodging in Kitahama】
  • Transportation: 10-15 min. walk from the Beppu Station East Exit
【Lodging in Kannawa】
  • Transportation: bus
  • Bus stop: Beppu Station West Exit #2 → Kannawa (25 min.)
  • Bus numbers: 2, 5, 7, 41 (bound for Kannawa)
  • Ride fee: approx. 330 yen
  • Transportation: Taxi (at the station taxi stand)
  • Ride fee: approx. 1,800 yen for compact-sized taxis.

The International Tourist Information Center is located within Beppu Station. (Service available in English and Korean. Irregular hours for Chinese.) Delivery and postal service are also available within the premises - recommended for those wishing to travel light.

Your luggage can be delivered to your hotel room and lodging facility via Yamato Transport located at the Beppu Station B-Passage. (Approx. 500 yen/item *limited to within Beppu City.)
Your luggage will arrive by 6 pm if placed order by 12 pm the same day.

Access to Yufuin from Hakata Station

Please refer to the following procedures for accessing Yufuin via our recommended route, the JR limited express train, Yufuin no Mori.

1. Reserve your seat

Reservations are required for all seats on the express Yufuin no Mori. Please inquire at the station ticket counter. Going into JR Hakata Station from the Chikushi Exit, the ticket counter is located on the left hand side. Look for the big, green sign.

2. Go through the turnstile and head to your platform

Please confirm your departure time, destination, and platform on the overhead digital board. Present your JR Kyushu Rail Pass to the station staff at the turnstile.

Head to the platform and check for your car number there.

Estimated time of travel to Yufuin is approximately 2 hours.

3. To your lodging facility from Yufuin Station

Some of the ryokan offer shuttle bus services. Your lodging facility may or may not be close to the station. Please check beforehand. If no shuttle services are available, feel free to make use of the taxis at the front of the station exit.

It is about a 20 min.walk from Yufuin Station to Yunotsubo Kaido, Kinrin Lake, and other tourist destinations in the area. Please make use of the Tourist Information Center located within the Yufuin Station building.
Delivery and postal service are also available right across from the station - recommended for those wishing to travel light.

Your luggage can be delivered to your hotel room/lodging facility via Yufuin Chikki right across from Yufuin Station. This service only applies to hotels and lodging facilities that are members of Yufuin Onsen Ryokan Association, but the vast majority of lodging facilities in Yufuin are members of the association.
A checkroom service and coin-operated lockers are also available. Refer to the Yufuin Chikki website for price information.

Limited express Yufuin no Mori


Limited express Yufuin no Mori

The Limited express train Yufuin no Mori is highly recommended for traveling to Yufuin.
The interior of this classy green express is decked with all wooden flooring and paneling, providing a luxurious, natural ambience while you travel down to the highland resort, Yufuin. The ride features kiosks and souvenir shops for Yufuin's specialty items as well as a commemorative photo service with a ride memoir plaque and the train conductor hat on your head.
